A classic ‘village’ view of Fairbridge. This is my feature piece for the exhibition showing our native Australian bushland with a view to the Darling Scarp. The dutch influenced architecture shows through the red flowering gum trees with the wattle and grass trees in the foreground. I’m sure arriving at Fairbridge Village set amongst the native bushland would have provided the arriving children a glimpse of hope and excitement after their long journey. The buildings I have painted in this artwork are Shakespeares house, the Headmasters house and the Dining Hall constructed in the 1920’s. Shakespeare’s House is one of the original cottages and Kingsley Fairbridge lived in Shakespeare until Fairbridge house was built.
